• We are preparing for a Budget that is predicted to be probably the worst since the foundation of the State. The last Budget was supposed to be the worst as was the one before that. But if there is one consistent characteristic in this Government, and the rotten one before, it is that is needs no lessons in dishing out low blows.
At this moment over half-a- million citizens of this country have failed to pay the €100 property charge. Some out of protest, but many others simply can't afford it.
On Wednesday everybody is going to be ordered to cough up multiples of that. They will be paying more for travel, have their child benefit slashed and the universal social charge will rise.
Rents will go up. Pensions will be hit, as will free travel for the elderly. Heating oil will be going up and if you fancy a pint to ease your depression then cough up a little more. And Christmas would not be Christmas without the VHI price hike that now goes up with our decorations.
Soon David Attenborough will be walking around Ireland trying to get a glimpse of the now almost extinct Irish middle classes.
