The report of councils losing money on parking fees puts paid to the myth that they are just a means of 'milking the motorist' Someone has to enforce parking controls, otherwise there would be chaos.
Many towns and villages are gridlocked as motorists double park, manoeuvre and hang around blocking traffic.
We should learn from countries with extensive pedestrianised areas, outdoor cafes, seating, space where people can 'hang out' or events take place. This is the way to attract tourists.
