A bus journey with bullies

Madam – I travel by bus a lot and over the years I have heard many snippets of conversation, not from eavesdropping or snooping, but simply because one happens to be sitting so near to those conversing that it's impossible not to hear.

Occasionally one hears something that gives pause for reflection, or that amuses. But you can also be confronted with words or behaviour of a darker kind. This was my experience during the pre-Christmas travel dash.

I am anxious not to identify the bus concerned so will avoid mentioning the route or the day of the incident. At a certain point in the journey I heard two young men, maybe in their late teens or early 20s, raising their voices above the level of the normal low-keyed exchanges one hears on a bus. My own seating arrangement was such that I could both hear and also clearly see them.
