A bright spark of strong heart

Sir -- The Magisterial power of the State must have struck a very blunt arrow into the strong heart of Teresa Tracy -- the owner of 12,000 trees on farmland in Clonmore, Tullamore, Co Offaly -- on September 13. On that day she was held in contempt of a High Court order granted to the ESB, and EirGrid, that she must comply with their command and allow them and their agents entry on to her land in order to demolish a designated number of trees planted, and carefully nurtured by her over many decades.

What did they expect from this woman? Ms Tracy could hardly agree to honour the collective intellects of venal idiots, who in a short while after the erection of overhead lines, and pylons on her land, will be compelled to do what all are now doing in the EU, entrusted with energy policy, and that is retro-fitting the entire outdated over-line infrastructural technology, and installing underground cables. This is because underground transmission cable technology has been proven to reduce power loss on transmission and increase energy efficiency, which is intrinsic to EU energy policy. The long-term benefits far outweigh the vastly exaggerated prohibitive cost arguments relating to the underground system.

Ms Tracy has shown the heart and spirit of a lion in relation to this affair -- she has suffered enough for her principles. In the end it is up to her to decide what to do next. No reasonable person who is aware of her case, and her long battle with Luddites and anti-rationalists, will think any less of her, no matter what she wishes to do. We could do with far more Teresa Tracys in Ireland, and I dare to think I may not be in a minority believing that.
