500,000 is a lot of bums on seats

The Grand Canal Theatre has proved that Irish audiences' demand for theatrical entertainment has not gone away despite tough financial times, with the theatre enjoying more than 500,000 customers since opening a year ago.

And general manager Stephen Faloon has hopes for further success with The Sound of Music, Peter Pan and Sister Act all opening later this year.

"With very strong programming in place for 2011, we are confident that our second year will be even more successful. We are delighted that Irish premieres of major West End shows feature heavily this year," Mr Faloon added.
