Fashion experts no dummies when it comes to cashing in on baby George

It's His Royal Highness, Prince George of Cambridge, or 'Bonny Prince Cutie' as the New Zealand press have taken to calling him while he undertakes his first tour of duty.

He duly turned up to his obligatory crawl-about yesterday in a natty, if slightly old fashioned romper dungaree suit and it naturally sold out online, despite costing €91 (£75) from designer Rachel Riley.

No Marks & Spencer baby-gros for this future King it seems: his fashion impact is set to be as great as his mother's and his late grandmother's before him.

The "Kate effect" is powerful -- shops and designers report a run on her outfits within minutes of pictures appearing. Irish designer Orla Kiely found her brown patterned day dress was snapped up in the hours after Kate wore it.

Is baby George set to follow the trend? And while he's at it, join other celebrity babies as they make fashion faux pas and style-setting looks?

If so, he's started early. The white Aden & Anais blanket which he was wrapped in as he left hospital sold out instantly. A couple of hours later it was already appearing on eBay second hand.

And don't think for a minute that such choices aren't cashed in on by shops gagging for the royal seal of approval. The tiny koala backpack that accompanied George off the plane was re-marketed immediately on the Save the Koala Shop website.


"Good enough for royalty, this kangaroo toy backpack is owned by Prince George and has sold out in most stores, but we have plenty in stock and more expected shortly." I'll say.

His tiny pre-walker shoes cost a manageable €30 and Kate appears to have bought them in several colours. Cue instant success for the seller and a lifetime of being prodded and analysed for George.

He's not alone. Harper Beckham, who is in no danger of being knocked off the top spot in the tiny fashion stakes, frequently has the same effect. How could she avoid it with Victoria as mum and several websites and blogs devoted to her wardrobe? The poor kid has no idea.

Take one recent entry: "Harper is wearing Mandarin Collar Blouse by Chloe and Bamboo Zip Black Coated Pants by Notify Denim (first worn on March 3rd 2014)". Or a blogger who clearly has more time on her hands than is sensible: "Harper was wearing Top with Sequin Bow by Little Marc Jacobs and Pink Jeans by Joe's Jeans. I do not think that these are by Stella McCartney, 'cause they do not appear to have ankle side zippers".

Well, glad that's clarified then.

Most are helpfully accompanied by information on where to purchase for your own top tot, with direct links, although if you are buying couture which your child will grow out of in five minutes from a top designer you probably have more money than sense.

Include Suri Cruise (daughter of Tom and Kate), Blue Ivy, of Beyonce and JayZ heritage, Kingston Rossdale, six-year-old son of Gwen Stefani or any and all of the six Jolie-Pitts, and you're pretty much sorted for the Autumn Winter collection of 2014, even if your bank manager isn't.

The Royals have always known the power of fashion. When Diana was feeling out of sorts, she would wear an old Virgin Atlantic sweatshirt knowing full well it wouldn't be printed. William and Kate happily wore the Olympics uniform to all its sporting events last summer and promote charities through clothing. Celebrities regularly do the same to show support for a pet project.

Looks like little George is set to follow suit -- and we are set to follow him. We all want to have fashionable tots, but don't go overboard, Kate, eh?
