With power, responsibility
WHAT a heart-lifting moment, when Aung San Suu Kyi appeared as a free woman before her people. And they are her people, regardless of any fake elections the brutish Burmese regime may rig in the interests of a puppet party.
She is the legitimate leader of the Burmese people. The world knows that. She cannot be deprived of her moral status, any more than she can be deprived of her dignity and courage, which have survived all those years of prison, house arrest and personal tragedy.
Her release marks a victory for the good. But does it mark a victory for "people power"? Can it mean the beginning of a peaceful revolution? Sadly, one has to look at these questions with great caution.
