WikiLeaks: Unique insights into the real world
TODAY this newspaper carries the first instalment of a flood of information obtained through the whistleblowing website WikiLeaks, founded by Julian Assange. It is not too much to call this exclusive series a major event in Irish journalism.
It consists of vast numbers of messages sent to the State Department in Washington (and passed on from there to other US government agencies) by diplomats in the American embassy in Dublin and the American consulate in Belfast.
Not only is the volume of material enormous, the insights it provides are immensely valuable. The cables show the intense interest taken by the US administration in our affairs, and not only those with a potential direct effect on Irish-US relations.
