Welfare cash must go only to needy

The Government's decision to subject jobless people claiming social welfare benefits to much closer scrutiny is welcome, if long overdue.

With the annual social welfare budget now running at over €20bn and almost 440,000 people on the live register, it is imperative that social welfare payments only go to those who are entitled to them.

Under the Government's Pathways to Work programme, details of which were published yesterday, any jobless social welfare claimant who refuses the opportunity of work or training will put their social welfare payments at risk.
