We need to make this nation work again
THE Live Register figures for March are a sobering reminder of the purpose of all the dramatic, complex business of stress tests, capitalisations and re-structurings -- to get things moving in the economy itself.
It comes as no surprise that the figures brought little consolation. The seasonally adjusted increase of 1,100 in the number signing on the Register was the first rise in five months. It also showed a bigger number of women joining the Register than men for the first time -- a sign that the building industry may be reaching the bottom, but other jobs continue to be lost.
The March data may not mean things are getting worse, but they are not getting better.
