We need more radical reform

After straining mightily, scrapping three constituencies altogether, altering more than 30 other constituencies, and breaching county boundaries with abandon, the Constituency Review Commission, whose report was published yesterday, delivered itself of a mouse.

Despite all of the changes it has proposed, the commission still only managed to reduce the number of TDs by just eight, less than 5pc of the current total of 166 Dail deputies.

Ever since the results of last year's census, which showed that the Irish population had increased by almost 350,000 since 2006, were published it was clear that major constituency revisions would be required.
