We must not repeat our past public pay mistakes
A civil service union leader warns members they must be ready to strike for better pay. That call comes amid a bruising and disruptive bus dispute likely to worsen before it can be settled.
It again signals the danger of returning to the mistakes of the recent past on public service pay. We could quite simply, and depressingly, be headed into a 'Back to the Future' scenario. But this time our problems would be compounded by the fallout from Brexit and US President Donald Trump's threats of economic isolationism.
In fairness to the leader of the Civil and Public Services Union, whose warning comes in an interview in this newspaper today, he is only articulating the frustration of his members. These workers are among the middle to lower-paid public servants and they have taken a hit, like most other people, since recession struck in 2008.
