We can’t just keep washing our hands of this problem

What part of hand-washing don't some hospital doctors understand? That must be the major question hanging over the profession after the latest report identified the lack of proper hygiene as an issue in five hospitals which were investigated by the Health Information and Quality Authority.

Surgeons and doctors working in hospitals are busy people. Washing your hands after touching any surface, substance or person must be a tedious and trying process that may have to be carried out 20 or more times an hour.

But with the scourge of MRSA and other diseases easily transmitted in hospitals, hygiene is an essential component of the job.
