Vinnie Doyle: simply the best

THE Irish Independent owes a great deal of its success to the force of nature that was Vincent Doyle, its editor for 24 years, who died yesterday.
His intense, competitive (some would say buccaneering) spirit was reflected in his fascination with circulation figures, his determination to be first with the big story and his frustration on the rare occasion when his newspaper was beaten to the post.
That competitive instinct radiated like a radio beacon to reporters, sub-editors and photographers (woe to he who failed to pick up on it) and motivated successions of formidable teams over the years.
