US can now declare 'victory' and go home

Yesterday, almost nine years after the invasion that ousted the tyrant Saddam Hussein, US military operations in Iraq came to a formal end.

During that period almost 4,500 American servicemen and women along with tens of thousands of Iraqis lost their lives. Was all of this death and suffering worth it?

With the benefit of hindsight there can be little doubt but that the case made by America to justify its original invasion of Iraq in March 2003 was deeply flawed.
