UNICEF and its advisers should stop digging now

EVERYONE involved in UNICEF's recent difficulties needs to take a deep breath, step back, and start again. They have already dug a deep hole for themselves. More digging is not recommended. The shovels have been active ladling money to PR firm Slattery Communications.
Outfits with the reputation and skills of Slattery do not come cheap but a semi-official charity tasked with helping children should have queried the wisdom of paying some €1,000 a day to handle the dismissal of its chief executive.
One can see why. The chief executive in question is Melanie Verwoerd, partner of the late Gerry Ryan. Like it or not, this is a celebrity story which will garner publicity. Celebrities already in the tale range from Liam Neeson to Dustin the Turkey.
