As Britain embarks on its biggest political rebalancing act in generations, the infighting on the bridge over Brexit is strengthening fears about chaos at the top.

Theresa May's cabinet is reported to be in a state of open revolt at a time when clarity and direction are crucial. We got a reminder of just how high the stakes actually are from Mrs May last night, when her spokesman declared free movement from the European Union into Britain will end in March 2019.

The signals from varying Tory ministers are contradictory and chaotic on how Britain will manage its divorce from the EU. Small wonder Taoiseach Leo Varadkar has been scathing in his criticism of the UK's approach to the critical negotiations.
