Topping up on dose of reality

LIKE Wile E Coyote, Finance Minister Brian Lenihan is rapidly running out of road for his options on spending cuts. An area where the State's scalpel is likely to fall is the extremely generous pay packages given to the chief executives of our semi-state companies.

In a highly populist move, the minister has let it be known that he has ordered a review into the salaries of these bosses.

Even at the height of the bubble, these salaries looked bloated. With more than 440,000 unemployed they are simply unsustainable.
