Time to wake up to reality

THIS was a week of rude awakenings, a week when the cost of sleepwalking reached record heights. Yesterday Taoiseach Brian Cowen finally woke up to the fact that the gentlemen who got off the plane from Brussels were not here for a stag weekend.
Mr Cowen has belatedly accepted that Ireland is indeed in talks with the IMF. Health Minister Mary Harney also had an awakening -- with the benefit of hindsight she mused that benchmarking may not have been in the best interests of the country.
One wondered where she was when Senator Joe O'Toole described it as installing a cash machine into the heart of the public service?
