Time for power to speak truth
AT a time when public disillusionment with the political system is running high, there could have been no worse week for this coalition Government or for Irish politics.
The resignation of Willie O'Dea on the day after the Dail had voted confidence in him represents a new nadir for Brian Cowen, the Taoiseach, and John Gormley, the leader of the Green Party.
Flip-flops are always unseemly, but when executed within 24 hours on the suitability of a man for high public office they make a mockery of all those involved. Mr Cowen and Mr Gormley then compounded their errors of judgment by trying to tell the people that what had happened had not really happened.
