The truth, the whole truth

IN heaping scathing criticism on those Irish lawyers, economists and regulators who contributed to economic collapse, the President was speaking for a public who feel hurt and cheated.
If anyone is shocked that Mary McAleese, herself a lawyer, should speak so strongly about members of her own profession and other pillars of society -- in Russia, no less -- they should consider the degree to which chronic economy with the truth contributed to our present dire state.
Suspicions were confirmed last July, when the secretary general of the Department of Finance, Kevin Cardiff, told the Public Accounts Committee just how misleading bankers had been, in September 2008, as the Government tried to gauge the severity of the crisis.
