The Trap era ended when we lost 6-1 to Germany on home territory

The Trapattoni era in Irish soccer ended abruptly and rather sourly yesterday when the Irish soccer manager finally walked off the pitch.

Trap, as he was known among the fans, did add to the gaiety of the nation. His legacy is that he got Ireland to a World Cup play-off against France, where we were robbed, and to a European Championship, where sadly the side was a serious let-down.

There is no doubt that in his day he was a great coach. He was also, as Robbie Keane said last night, someone "who carried himself with dignity".
