The snow must go on

IT has been wryly observed that the same people who laugh at science fiction still listen to weather forecasts and economists. Certainly the two subjects have never been more topical. Character, they say, is not created but rather revealed by adversity; and yesterday the nation was given welcome relief from the unforgiving elements with the arrival of three new little characters whose arrival down a mountain in a jeep, represented the real meaning of true grit.

The manner in which Mandy Hayden Freeman took possession of her three very special deliveries brought a smile to the frozen faces of the nation. On RTE's News at One she told how her good news almost stopped the heart of another father waiting outside the delivery unit. A midwife mistakenly took him for the father of the triplets and congratulated him on his dramatically extended family. She told how the poor man nearly fell over as he had been informed to expect one little girl.

Equally heartening yesterday was the news surrounding the dramatic nuptials of Maria Tierney and Ollie Finnegan.
