The resignation of Steve Jobs as chief executive of Apple, the iconic computer and consumer electronics firm he co-founded in 1976, brings down the curtain on the career of one of the most influential and innovative businessmen of the late 20th and early 21st centuries.
It was Apple's introduction of the Macintosh in 1984 that paved the way for the desktop computer which brought computing to the masses.
Although Apple eventually lost out to the IBM PC in the format wars, the PC would probably never have happened without the spur initially provided by the arrival of the Macintosh.
