For the Exchequer, the newfound ability of the computers of different government departments to communicate with one another looks like becoming the gift that keeps on giving.
The year had barely begun when it emerged that, thanks to information supplied by the Department of Social Protection, the Revenue Commissioners had written to 150,000 pensioners informing them that they may have underpaid tax on their occupational pensions.
Now, as we report in today's paper, thanks to information supplied by the HSE, the Department of Social Protection has identified up to 1,500 pensioners resident in nursing homes who may still be receiving benefits such as the living alone allowance and the weekly fuel allowance to which they are no longer entitled.
