Terrorists at the Cabinet door

A statement by the Chief Constable of the Police Service of Northern Ireland yesterday that the Provisional IRA still exists, and the further revelations last week that members may have been involved in a murder in Belfast, must surely come as an alarming wake-up call to the electorate in the Republic.
The statements by the PSNI go towards confirming a view expressed by many, including several political leaders here - and not least by this newspaper - that the Provisional IRA not only exists but also exerts huge influence over, if not direct control of, its polticial front Sinn Fein.
Sinn Fein has made methodical advances in mainstream politics since the IRA called a ceasefire and the subsequent Good Friday Agreement almost 20 years ago to the point that it now harbours what opinion polls suggest to be a realistic prospect of forming or entering government here at a time when the dysfunctional Northern Ireland Assembly is at risk of collapse in relation to these latest revelations.
