Ministers knew it was going to be a tough week due to the Sgt Maurice McCabe controversy.

But with a bit of luck and with Fianna Fáil looking the other way on a Sinn Féin 'No Confidence' motion, they thought they would struggle through.

But then two things happened in the late afternoon yesterday to dampen their hopes. A clearly anxious Children's Minister, Katherine Zappone, told journalists that she had mentioned the Tusla link to Taoiseach Enda Kenny before last week's Cabinet meeting.
