Such a flap over Dustin's victory

Monday February 25 2008

THE decision to allow a song by Dustin the Turkey on to the shortlist to represent Ireland at this year's Eurovision Song Contest ruffled many feathers across the country. Now, to the horror of several leading songwriters, the loud-mouthed children's puppet has won the right to travel to Serbia for the main competition after a public telephone vote.

Frank McNamara and Shay Healy, who have written three winning Eurovision songs between them, have criticised the decision to enter a turkey in the competition as "absolutely disgraceful".

However, RTE has defended the decision. Bill Hughes, chairman of the RTE committee which chose the finalists, believes Dustin's song is "very funny" and has a "great melody".

The turkey's song, 'Irelande Douze Points', is sung in a thick Dublin accent, and pokes fun at everything from Bono's trousers to Riverdance.

So is the decision to allow a puppet to represent us in the contest a matter of deep shame and embarrassment for a nation which has had a proud Eurovision tradition, with a record-breaking seven victories to our name?

Or is it just a reflection of the increasingly bizarre acts that adorn the Eurovision stage? Whatever your view, the chickens could come home to roost if Dustin stuffs the opposition and gobbles up an unprecedented eighth Eurovision victory for Ireland.
