Station closures save cash, but at what cost?

Justice Minister Alan Shatter chose Budget day to announce the plan to close 100 garda stations. Presumably, he did not wish the statement to receive the widest-possible publicity.
But regardless of the timing of the announcement, wide publicity – and wide discontent – were always inevitable. Next to personal finance, personal safety is the greatest preoccupation of most people. The elderly in particular derive comfort from the close presence of the forces of law and order.
And the protests against closures, which have grown more vocal and more widespread in the last few days, have a broader focus too.
