Spectre of inflation raises its problematic head once again

IT is doubtful if even Michael Collins, our earliest Finance Minister, had more on his mind as the current incumbent when the fledgling State was born.

Michael Noonan's desk will be littered with files marked urgent attention. And the last thing he needed was another headache.

The news that prices rose by 0.9pc in February and were up by 2.2pc on an annual basis, will not make his life any easier.
