Solving the maths problem

ENDA may have got his arithmetic right, but the education authorities are having a tough time with the subject. Like many maths problems, this one looks simple at first, but is proving really difficult to work out.
The proposition is this. Encourage young people to study maths so that they will be equipped to enter technical disciplines that will form the basis of a future "knowledge economy" and the country will prosper.
The trouble is, vague talk about a "knowledge economy" some time in the future has not stopped young people from turning their backs on maths and science.
