Signs of hope, but let's not get carried away

IN the course of this seemingly endless economic downturn, a number of phrases have entered our lexicon.

The one that is most relevant just now describes our current, though transitory, position as "bouncing along the bottom''.

It doesn't sound that optimistic, but it at least has the virtue of suggesting that there is some sort of bounce and that things, at the very least, have bottomed out.
