The planning mistakes of the past will only be avoided in the future if we, the public, engage.

A six-part series in the Irish Independent which begins today, 'Future Proof: planning where we live', aims to set out the challenges involved in planning better communities, where access to key public services such as water, healthcare, education, transport and childcare are considered in line with the need to build new homes.

What we decide today will dictate how we live over the coming decades, and we will have to marry the requirements of proper planning with catering for demand from our citizens.
