Sensible move on sick leave
One of the most damaging and least defined consequences of the recession is the gap it has opened up between the private and public sectors.
Myths and misconceptions have been allowed to develop which appear to make the breach even wider. The most commonly heard complaint is that those in the public sector enjoy perks and privileges that would never be tolerated in the private sector. These are seized upon and distorted to fuel a blame game and stigmatise.
Announcements like yesterday's, that sick leave entitlements for almost 300,000 public servants are to be halved following a Labour Court recommendation, are a case in point.
