Recent spate of killings sparks important debate
JANUARY 2014 is just 20 days old but already the high rate of homicide in this country is causing serious alarm. By teatime yesterday, the figure stood at eight. That is eight lives abruptly and brutally ended by another human being who had no right to do any such thing.
Some succour is being taken from the fact that just two of these killings are attributed to 'organised crime' or gangsterism. The others are being categorised as violent incidents, which ended in fatality.
Everybody will hope that the high number of killings is just 'a statistical spike' rather than the start of a new trend. Only time itself can give us a definitive answer.
