Prolonging the waste

IN overall terms the amounts are small, but the principles are exactly the same: taxpayers' money was spent on sites for new schools that have never been built. What are those sites worth today -- especially those lying untouched and idle?

There has been no progress at all on some of them while 35 sites, costing more than €42m, remain at the design and planning stages.

Yet there is an acceptance that there are around 1,200 schools in need of new buildings or extensions.
