Presidency key to our future relations

Enda Kenny, it is learned, plans to postpone any reshuffle of his Government until after the conclusion of Ireland's European presidency, which begins on January 1, 2013, and ends on June 30, 2013.

Unlike most of the decisions which the Taoiseach has had to make over the last, fraught, 21 months, this one was easy and obvious.

It means that the ministerial changes will come half-way through the Dail term, the "natural" point – always assuming that the Government remains in office long enough and that individual ministers do not find the pressure of work unbearable.
