Political system needs overhaul
Fianna Fail TD Mary O'Rourke last night announced her intention, via the internet, to contest her ninth general election next year. The last time she failed to win a seat, in the 2002 General Election, she entered the Seanad, where she became leader on the government benches.
She headed up a cross-party group proposing modest changes to the Upper House of the Oireachtas.
Despite the consensus, the 2004 report of the Sub-Committee on Seanad Reform continues to gather dust with another 11 similar reports.
