Pointless escape from reality
IT is not at all clear that enough is being done about the proliferation of so-called head shops. The sight of long queues of people seeking to buy drugs, and not for medicinal purposes, is pathetic. It may yet become a symbol of a miserable society bereft of morale, just as pictures of soup queues conveyed the despair of the Great Depression.
The gardai say that where a head shop opens, muggings and other crimes increase.
The Government has decided that the sale of a number of substances that are used to obtain "legal highs" are to be banned by the summer, but state pharmacists are struggling to compile a list from a host of drugs and chemicals, most of which have never been properly tested for human consumption.
