Performing real public service
THEY are so often the target of criticism and the butt of jokes, but those public servants who have kept our roads open and our transport system flowing in the face of huge adversity should be the recipients of our gratitude and appreciation this week.
Last year and early in 2010 we, and local councils generally, were caught unprepared and unawares. It is an entirely different picture this time around. The sense of urgency and problem solving is palpable. There is a readiness to tackle problems as they arise, and indeed to avert many of them.
Of course not everything is perfect, and if we wanted to crib and quibble we could always find points of fault.
