A total failure of security systems is the only way to describe the people-trafficking operation that was run out of Dublin Airport. Gardaí deserve to be congratulated for uncovering  the  smuggling gang involving staff at Aer Lingus. The investigation appears to have been long-running and sophisticated, culminating in the arrests of three individuals yesterday.

Nonetheless, there are serious questions to be answered now by gardaí, Dublin Airport authorities and Aer Lingus management.

That this smuggling ring was being run in this manner through Dublin Airport for up to six years does sound alarm bells, especially as airports are supposed to operate at an increased level of security.
