Our rural communities need a garda presence

TO those who live in the countryside, often miles from a neighbour or the nearest village, the comfort of knowing that there is someone out there looking after them is important.

That's why rural garda stations -- like post offices before them -- play such a crucial role.

And that is why there is an outcry as we learn that more of those stations are set to close next year, as part of budget cutbacks.
