Our politics is rotten and it's time for change

The revelation that former Taoiseach Bertie Ahern and former Tanaiste Mary Coughlan both made inquiries to planners about those who had made donations to Fianna Fail, is profoundly depressing.
Coming at a time when the country is seeking to turn over a new leaf, the fact that two politicians who held high offices in government made such inquiries demonstrates yet again the need for a complete change in the way politics is conducted.
While there was nothing illegal in what either Mr Ahern or Ms Coughlan did, the fact that they saw nothing wrong in writing to local authorities and An Bord Pleanala is further evidence of just how far off the rails Irish politics has veered in recent years.
