Our ivory towers remain

IN a world in which the rich suddenly become less rich and the poor grow ever poorer, the glittering prizes available to the privileged people at the top in our universities seem quite extraordinary.
Professors in Irish universities are paid on a scale of about €113,000 to €146,000, the average being €136,000, which is a great deal more than their counterparts in Canada (€61,000 to €83,000).
Two years ago, Education Minister Batt O'Keeffe announced there was to be a thorough audit of the university sector, with special attention to the extraordinary levels of pay enjoyed by some academics and whether they were worth their salaries.
