Open minds needed on thorny issue of debt collection

Private individuals, like sovereign nations, are often slow to pay their debts. Public Expenditure and Reform Minister Brendan Howlin is considering a means of speeding the process up. The Department of Social Protection is owed more than €340m. Some of this dates back five years or more.

The Revenue Commissioners is owed a great deal more – €1.3bn. Has the time come for new methods of collection?

For many people, the thought of using private debt collectors to collect money due to the Government is unpalatable. They picture them as menacing and best avoided.
