On the wrong track

The failure of Iarnrod Eireann to carry out essential safety checks on its network despite being obliged to do so is of grave concern. The revelation comes following an investigation into last August's collapse of the Malahide viaduct by the Railway Safety Commission (RSC).
The inquiry will do little for confidence in public transport as it also discovered that most safety checklists had not even been used and the requisite levels of inspections were not being made.
In a damning litany of breaches and oversights, the report also says there is doubt that it was checked for erosion.
