No farewell to arms
HOW wonderful it would be if we could believe the US serviceman whom we saw and heard on the TV news shouting: "It's over. We're going home. We won."
Good for him, and for the thousands of his comrades, said to be the last of the combat troops, who have waved goodbye to Iraq and a murderous war. But nobody truly believes that it really is all over.
For a start, 56,000 US soldiers remain in Iraq, supposedly to train and advise Iraqi troops. But the Americans will continue to carry arms; it would be suicidal madness not to do so. They will travel around in armed and armoured vehicles and will be available to engage in military operations if they are asked by the Iraqis.
