New blood at RTE was badly needed

The appointment of Kevin Bakhurst as RTE's new head of news and current affairs marks an important step in the state broadcaster's rehabilitation following last year's catastrophic libelling of Fr Kevin Reynolds.

In her devastating report on the Reynolds libel for the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland, which was published last May, former BBC Northern Ireland controller Anna Carragher identified a "groupthink" at RTE which contributed to the debacle.

This groupthink meant that the hard questions weren't asked inside RTE before the decision was made to broadcast the now-infamous 'Mission to Prey' programme.
