Mobile madness at the wheel

TO any sane and sensible person, there are few things more infuriating than the sight of drivers using mobile phones. It is dangerous and, in these days of cheap technology for legal hand-free systems, completely unnecessary.
The gardai are therefore to be commended on the news that more than 110 drivers a day are being caught using their mobile phones behind the wheel. This satisfaction is tempered by the thought of how so many people can be so stupid -- and the much greater number who, with the best will in the world, will not be caught.
Nevertheless, one of the best deterrents to any foolish or bad behaviour is knowing someone who got caught. The unpublished figures from the Road Safety Authority show that almost 42,000 drivers received penalty points for illegal mobile phone use over the past 12 months as gardai cracked down on the idiotic practice.
