Miriam's marvellous but what RTE really needs is new faces
MANY people will be disappointed to hear that Miriam O'Callaghan's Sunday morning RTE Radio 1 show 'Miriam Meets' is ending soon. Others will be less upset – though not because they have anything against the popular radio show, much less against Ms O'Callaghan.
Her contribution to television and radio, from hard-hitting current affairs programmes right across the range to lighter programmes, is extraordinary. She deserves further praise for not seeking extra pay for taking on extra shows when the public service broadcaster is, like most companies, feeling the pinch.
But some RTE bosses emerge with less credit in this matter. The plain fact is that they have been gutless and/or downright lazy when it comes to giving younger talent an opportunity to shine.
